print design process

Getting Started

Everyone has a different design process which they use to go about creating their designs for printing. I don’t think that there is one definitive process, however this will give you an insight into how I work best.

1. Communication is essential to a projects success. I will ask for you to fill out a quote form or have a phone conversation to discuss your project. A meeting is held with any new client before I begin any work. It is so easy to get carried away and see the project from too many angles, but it’s always worth stating all objectives before you proceed to create anything.

2. Objectives of what you would like to accomplish from the printed material you are choosing. Asking those important five questions of Who?(do you want to target). What?(is it you are trying to communicate or sell). Why?(should someone want to buy the product or services. When?(can I get the product or service). Where?(can I get this product or service). These are the messages that should be received by the viewer and the design should express these clearly.

3. Text content is then given to me and is preferred in electronic format. Knowing the textual content is imperative to the layout and design. I will always give insight and suggestions if needed. All text content should be finalized before the before graphics are included.

4. Assemble photos to be included. You might need to take product photos or hire a photographer to take them, if you haven't already. If you have quite a few, burn them onto a CD. Optionally, I have outside sources for most graphic illustrations or photos that could be needed.

5. Which one and how many-there are many printing choices and a wide range of prices. You may want to combine several print materials to enhance your companies marketing strategy. I offer every print option from business cards to banners and everything in between.

6. Proofs-There are usually up to three revisions without additional design costs. The customer is responsible for the final proof for any mistakes. It is best to have many people look at the phone numbers, addresses, names and vital information for any mistakes. After the last email proof is approved the client is responsible.

If you complete these tasks, you will be well on your way to creating attractive and useful print marketing to show your company’s value to potential customers.
